Customers Reviews 2010-07-25 LOSING "WEIGHT" IS MEANINGLESS Aa is all too often the case the cover of the book features "weight" loss. Unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of reader reviews also write about losing "weight" which ignores what is REALLY important - LEAN body mass. Stop eating for a few days, and I guarantee you will lose much "weight" as I did a few years ago. The "weight" lost will be mainly water and muscle.
As Roger John Williams (1893 - 1988), American biochemist who named folic acid and discovered pantothenic acid, a member of the National Academy of Sciences and President of the American Chemical Society, explained in his "Biochemical Individuality" (ISBN 13: 9780879838935 and ISBN 10: 0879838930) in 1956, there is a HUGH difference between one person and another. In a world of information overload there are some universal truths. An optimum diet minimizes JUNK REFINED carbs. Optimal amounts of macronutrients (carbs, proteins, fats) in percentages of total caloric intake MAY vary from one person to another. Peer reviewed studies DO COUNT. This is where Atkins proponents are weak and Campbell is strong.
BEFORE AND AFTER ?
It would help us all to better appreciate individual "success" testimonials that abound in many reviews if all reviewers would make a point of downplaying "weight" loss as such and cite before and after body composition data (% lean body mass) AND before and after data derived from blood panels AND other useful indicators of health such as blood pressure, resting pulse, heart ejection fraction, recovery time from exertion etc.
What one "believes" is FAR less important than the REASONS behind the things that one "knows" - which may not be so.
| 2010-07-25 Way to Go; An update for the Atkins group I did Atkins back in 2005 and lost 58lbs. I was wearing the same size jeans I wore in high school. I was off my High Blood Pressure Medication. I was feeling good and looked great.
Then I cheated here and there (pizza and desserts) and kept telling myself, "look how much I have already lost, I can do this, it's not like I am as fat as I was. Right?" WRONG. Not only did I gain it all back but it found 12 more friends. Now I am on a stronger dose of High BP medication and considered pre-diabetic. I thought I was cheating to eat yummy foods; but in reality I was cheating myself of my own health.
I tried looking back into this way of eating with the books that were published after Dr. Atkins died, but they never really hit home like they did back in '05. And I got hit with the "Atkins Flu" that I didn't want to try to get past. That was myself being lazy. So I tried other diets; and failed because I was always hungry. This made me cranky and easily irritated - sorry friends and family. And try after try I would turn very low numbers like 1-2 on the scale. I understand those numbers if I was close to my goal, but I have a lot of weight to shed. It was very disappointing and discouraging. So...
When I heard about this book I thought I would give it one more try. After all, it did work for me once. The book is an easy read. These 3 doctors really gave it incite to why/how it works. Nice refresher for me and it gave some great pointers on how to avoid the "Atkins Flu". I can't believe one little tip would help me get past the flu and move on to losing weight without any distractions. In just the first week I lost 6.6 lbs. If that is not encouragement, I don't know what is.
I don't know about you, but I want to be that skinny person that I met back in 2005. I want to be in shape and not get winded for doing things like walking up 4 fights of stairs. I guess the big difference is that I want it now as bad as I wanted it back then. If you want to be skinny too - go pick up a copy for yourself. You have nothing but the weight to lose.
| 2010-07-13 Life changing I was one of those guys who just couldn't get enough soda, pasta and candybars. I was also the guy that said that Atkins was a bunch of crap. Boy was I wrong. I've been going for about two weeks now and i've lost 15 lbs. Clothes are fitting better, I have more energy now that I've gotten over the post-carb slump. I feel great, its improved my mood. As much as I hate to eat crow, I guess I'll have to say that I'm a believer. Thank you Atkins. | 2010-07-13 THe "New Atkins" diet and a "New Me!" I purchased this book without knowing much about it other than what I've heard about Atkins from a few friends. I needed to lose 25 pounds and was looking for a way to get off my dark chocolate addiction. Before I started the "Induction" phase of the diet, I read all the preceeding pages in the book first, often going back to them when I wanted something clarified in my mind. I spent about ten days with the book before starting Induction.
In less than 4 weeks I've lost 15 pounds, and have never felt better! Instead of reaching for chocolate, I'll reach for green olives or an avacado and some cheese when I want a snack. My energy level has increased dramatically as well, but the biggest benefit was the total elimination of very bad acid reflux disease, GERD.
I went to the hospital ER 6 weeks ago because I kept waking up in the middle of the night with vomit in my mouth. After the endoscopy revealed severe acid reflux, my doctor put me on Prilosec, twice a day, and said I would have to take it for the rest of my life. It helped only somewhat, and I was usually miserable. Two weeks into Atkins and my symptoms were gone. I completely quit taking the Prilosec and haven't had it in the last two weeks and have never had a single symptom of GERD! So, I', healthier all the way around!
I can't believe how much better I feel after having a couple of eggs, cheese, and several strips of bacon in the morning, compared back to when I was eating my "high fiber" expensive cereal and eating a carton of yogurt. And I'm full for hours longer, too!
This new book is wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed all the science behind the diet, and made sure to be responsible enough to do my own research into the claims the book made. Happily, I found tons of data corroborating the Atkin's claims. The book completely explains how metabolism works and how different foods can affect the metabolism. I certainly would recommend this book! | 2010-07-12 Becoming just another diet Don't get me wrong. THe book is well-written, insprational, and has some great case studies. It also eliminates some of the inconsistent advice on veggie portion sizes that Dr. Atkins was guilty of giving. However, this book completes the diet's metamorphasis from something "magic" to just another restricted calorie diet.
I am an Atkins follower and have been successful on the diet, but through either: 1.) a desire to get less negative press, or 2.) the disproving of some of the theories, the authors mark a departure from predecessor books. Gone is the claim of a "metabolic advantage", i.e., eating the Atkins way allows you to eat more calories than on a traditional diet like Weight Watchers. In its place are fairly strict "protein restrictions." Now look, I wasn't born yesterday. There's basically three chemical food groups of significance: Proteins, carbs, and fats. If you put limits on the carbs I eat AND put limits on the proteins I eat, isn't this just another calorie restricted diet? Yeah, sure you don't restrict my fat intake, but since no one is going around drinking 8 oz glasses of olive oil or bacon grease, why would you need to?
So yes, if you want to lose wait easily, healthily, and pleasurably, I still believe this diet is the best option for you, but alas, some of the retreats in the claims over the last 20 years makes me feel almost like I felt when I learned there was no santa claus. |

Cold or Hot?
