Finally the evidence I needed to go vegan...
I read this book after my husband (48 yrs old) had a severe heart attack. He is not overweight, does not smoke or drink alcohol...in good physical shape, no diabetes or high cholesterol. His "risk" was invisible--seems to be inherited from his Philippino heritage. But, this book explained with evidence and science why animal protein is not good for humans. We have changed our diet according to this book and are optimistic about our next medical lab results. Dr. Esselstyn earnestly and sensibly takes on all the food and diet myths today using sane evidence combined with science/biology. I have bought three copies of this book and sent them out to relatives who have heart disease.

Excellent Book for Your Health
I bought this book for my wife who has high cholesterol. She has read it and I'm currently reading it and we both have found it an eye opener in many respects. This book is a must read for many with heart disease or with history of heart disease in their family. We have started the program as outlined in the book and will report back in a few weeks after my wife's cholesterol check.

This is a must read for anyone with heart disease or hypertension. A great plus is the vegetarian recipes, "wow" they are delicious.

Had I read this book earlier, I would have opposed surgical intervention for my mother's heart condition
In the midst of my 90 year old mother's hospitalization for blocked arteries and damaged heart valve, I was told during the course of my routine semi-annual heart exam that my heart valve leakage had gotten worse and would probably require a valve replacement in 10 years. I had always suspected my condition was diet related but had not found neither the motivation nor the proper guidance to address the problem. When my mother's health condition was providing me the motivation to address my own health problem, I learned from a friend about Dr. Esselstyn's video and purchased his book at the end of December. The book's clear, scientific explanation of the consequences of the modern western diet on the functioning of the heart empowered me to follow Dr. Esselstyn's recommendations to the letter. The results have been nothing but dramatic. My blood pressure has stabilized. I have lost cravings for food. I lost 20 pounds. I have gained control of the functioning of my body and my health. I have been following his diet now for one month since early January and I am looking forward to my next visit with the Cardiologist at the end of this coming March. I am confident that by continuing to follow the advise prescribed in Dr. Esselstyn's book I will be able to reverse the damage that years of a diet rich in oils and animal protein has brought about. I like to thank Dr. Esselstyn for writing an easily read book of utmost relevance to thousands of individuals all over the world suffering from a health condition caused by a lack of understanding of the basic rules of a proper diet.

It's all true and THEN some!
I ordered the Caldwell B. Esselstyn book Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease: The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven, Nutrition-Based Cure soon before my November 19 cholesterol panel. Good thing.... My Total Cholesterol was 302 on that day. So I tracked my package and was glad it had shipped early. Then I scanned the Internet to preview his ideas and to get started doing SOMEthing while I waited. within a couple of days I was eating very close to Dr. Esselstyn's nutrition program.

Three weeks later (after reading Dr. Esselstyn's very approachable yet hard-minded book and while still exploring Ann Esselstyn's 150 recipes which comprise much of the volume) I tested again and found my Total Cholesterol had dropped to 226 and LDL was down from 191 to 118. These plummeting scores reflected what Dr. Esselstyn writes about his early and on-going patients. I was amazed to fit into that astonishing profile.

Testing at week six showed TC at 202 and LDL at 111. The big drama that day was a 92 point drop in triglycerides. Tomorrow it's time for another panel, and I look forward to seeing a little more progress toward Dr. Esselstyn's goals of TC < 150 and LDL < 80.

The Esselstyns have written a surprisingly clear book which gets the science behind the food program across painlessly and gets food preparation off to a delicious start. This is very helpful when friends and family declare that olive oil is "heart healthy," or that everyone needs dairy products for calcium, or ask "then what CAN you eat?" What we can eat is a whole foods, plant based, diet -- as 4 billion other people around the world eat. But we westerners have the widest imaginable variety of vegetables, fruits, grains, and beans to pick from.
